The Wall Street Journal published an article yesterday titled "What the In-Crowd Knows," that states that no self-respecting industry is without a must-read blog by everyone in said industry.

For the publishing industry, they sited Book Slut and Publisher's Marketplace.

We thought it might be interesting to run both blogs through a BlogPulse analysis to see how popular they really are. In the chart above you can see it's pretty obvious that at $20 a month, a marketplace can't compete with a free slut.

According to the Christian Science Monitor:

"Last year, US consumers spent more than $2.2 billion to buy 111 million used books. That's up 11 percent from 2003, according to a landmark study by the Book Industry Study Group. Most significantly, the growth is happening on the Internet. Online sales of used trade books - those aimed at a general audience - jumped 33 percent last year. By contrast, trade-book sales at traditional bookstores rose 4.6 percent.

'Used trade books have been growing 25 percent a year,' says Jeff Hayes, group director of InfoTrends/CAP Ventures, a research firm in Weymouth, Mass. 'New trade books are growing only a couple percent a year.'"

iPod Love

The San Jose Mercury News has a great article about this thing we call iPod Love. (Registration required, but give BugMeNot a chance to get around it.)

"At the same time, music is very intimate -- and we can have an emotional attachment that keeps us wanting to plug in. Some songs will always remind you of your first kiss, your best friend's wedding, the road trip you took across the country after graduating from college.

Music can also be a tool for defining and reinventing ourselves. As teens we use music to wall off our parents. In college, many of us discover new music that puts some distance between adolescence and adulthood, and perhaps gives us new ideas about politics, the world or ourselves.

The beauty of the iPod is that it makes it easy for adults to instantly return to those personal worlds. Thanks to the iTunes store, I've reconnected with songs I haven't heard in eons, proof to me that the power of the iPod to evoke passionate responses is mainly a reflection of our relationships with our music."

It's true! I have on my iPod a mix called "Melancholy." It's packed primarily with cheesey soft rocks from the seventies. I play songs like "Sunshine on My Shoulders" and start to sing along and my wife will leave the room because I sound like Kermit the Frog and anything that makes me make that sound can't be good, she says.

But I don't care! Those songs tore me up in 8th grade and they can still mess me up today. It's very cathartic. And personal.
